A Very Special Olympics

Story by Hope Monte|Entertainment Editor

The 14th Annual Special Olympics Track and Field Meet is Thursday, April 18, 2019 at Ron Poe Stadium. The McKinney Mavericks are included among more than 340 special needs athletes from McKinney and will compete against another 450 athletes from other districts.

The Special Olympics pep rally is today during sixth and seventh periods. Tickets are being sold at all lunches for two dollars, so come get the team excited and show them some support to send their send to the Special Olympics.

All school year PALS students are involved in a P.E. class with special needs students and help them prepare for their events and accompany them at the Special Olympics.

“[Special Olympics is] an opportunity for our friends to show off their skills that they’ve been working on in Partners P.E., a day to be outside, to have fun with their friends from across the district, and a time to celebrate all of their accomplishments,” PALS teacher Ms. Abel said.

Today’s pep rally is a great opportunity to show some great Bronco spirit.

“When people come and cheer them on it makes them feel really good about themselves and feel like a true athlete,” junior PALS and Partners P.E. member Holly Keil said.

Students and their families can also support Special Olympics by going to a local Chick-fil-A for Spirit Night tonight. Make sure to let the cashier know you are there for Spirit Night.

This is a very exciting week for the Special Olympic athletes and there are many ways to show support. Make sure to show off that Bronco pride one way or another!
