Broncos Help ‘Make-A-Wish’ Come True

Story by Laura Boyd

Boyd welcomed a new face to the Bronco family. Shane B., a Make-A-Wish Foundation grant recipient, was granted the opportunity to go to Disney World this June at Boyd’s final pep rally on Feb. 1, 2019. Thanks to fundraisers from student council, he and his family received nearly $7,000 to cover the costs of a trip to “The Most Magical Place On Earth.”

Although Boyd helped with the unveiling of Shane’s wish, the real magic happened behind the scenes of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. This non-profit organization made its name by granting critically ill children’s wishes for nearly 40 years. Make-A-Wish relies almost entirely on volunteers and donations, creating an easy link to become involved with the foundation.

As Boyd becomes more involved, principal Dr. Jennifer Peirson has created a very personal relationship with Make-A-Wish. “[I] think it helps us to remember that there are people out there that need our help… it’s nice to help others and to realize that there are people out there fighting battles that we can support them and make things better for them,” Perison said.

Aaliyah Edwards, a senior member of student council, explained that making Boyd a major part of the Make-A-Wish Foundation creates a “community project that we take a lot of pride in.”

With this being the second wish that Boyd helped grant, Boyd has become permanently invested with the program. “I love getting to get to know the [child] a little bit… [and knowing] that we’re doing something positive in the community,” Edwards explained.

While Boyd has helped grant two special wishes alongside the Make-A-Wish Foundation, more than 285,000 wishes have been granted worldwide. And, according to www.wish.org, a life is changed every 34 minutes.

Dr. Peirson wants to keep Boyd involved with the organization and encourages Boyd students “to open [their] hearts up and [their] lives to other people who need [their] assistance.”

As the years progress, Dr. Peirson hopes that future Broncos keep up the tradition, continuing to help our community by granting wishes and making dreams come true.
