Parking in Downtown McKinney has been a hassle, but now with the new Chestnut Commons parking garage, visitors have more than 300 new parking spots from which to choose.
The garage officially opened on the corner of Chestnut and Herndon streets on Feb. 1, 2019. The garage is five stories high and features a mosaic called “McKinney Blooms.”
“The parking is pretty hectic. You need to get there early to get a spot,” sophomore Fletcher Cantrell said. “The parking garage could help a great deal because there is so little parking around.”
“We realize parking is often the first experience people have when they come downtown and we want to do everything we can to ensure it is a positive experience. This garage will go a long way in alleviating some of the parking capacity issues we’ve faced in the past,” Mayor George Fuller said to Community Impact Newspaper.
The extra parking was needed especially since last year at least 21 new business opened downtown. With the new businesses come changing demographics. Lately, business owners say they have noticed a younger crowd visiting.
“I go to downtown like once a week. I like to go eat at mostly the Irish Pub, and window shopping,” Cantrell said.
