The Final Four has arrived and the games are set. Only one 1-seed remains while history was made for Auburn and Texas Tech who both made the Final Four for the first time in school history. Texas Tech’s win was over the 1-seed Gonzaga.
“I think it’s awesome and they’ve had a great season,” Boyd teacher, coach, and yearbook adviser Catherine Faught, a former Red Raider said about her Red Raiders making it this far. “If they don’t let their nerves get to them, they can pull away with a win.”
Auburn won a nail biter of a game in overtime against the Kentucky Wildcats who have been competing in the NCAA tournament for five years in a row. Along with Kentucky, another team that was knocked out by the Tigers, was the 2017 winners of the tournament, the UNC Tarheels, they got upset by a score of 97-80.
Meanwhile Michigan State beat the powerhouse of the tournament, Duke, who many analysts favored to win. Virginia is also moving on to the Final Four with their overtime win against the Purdue Boilermakers. Virginia was the last team to make it into the Final Four and the only 1-seed remaining.
Auburn and Virginia face off first on Saturday, April 6th. Auburn lost their best player, Chuma Okeke, in the Sweet Sixteen against UNC and used that injury as motivation to win more games. Virginia, on the other hand, is using their loss last year against the 16-seed University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) as motivation. Both teams have been statistically good with Auburn putting up a lot points and Virginia holding teams to just 58 points a game. This game will showcase two teams, each with different strengths that counter each other which will make it that much more interesting to watch.
Texas Tech and Michigan State will play immediately after Auburn and Virginia. Texas Tech plays very similarly to Virginia, using their defense to win games instead of their offense. Michigan State has a very good offense which is why they have won many of their games with more than 10 points over their opponents. This will also make this game more interesting since Texas Tech has a very good defense while Michigan State has a good offense. What teams will pull away and move on to the Championship game? There is no way to tell. We will just have to wait and see.
