TikTok is a social media platform that has recently captured the attention of 500 million people around the globe, most in India. TikTok allows people to make short music video parodies, as well as funny video clips, and share them with others.
“TikTok is a really fun way for someone to express themselves,” freshman Cella Norton said. “It’s really a fun way for people to do funny and stupid stuff.”
Teenagers especially love this app mainly because it’s a social media platform and because it’s similar to the famous Vine app, which was similar to TikTok.
Formerly known in America as Musical.ly, it was not until the app got updated to TikTok about three years ago that teenagers started to download TikTok in record numbers. Over half of the TikTok downloads were on teenager’s devices according the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) said. The app was created by two Chinese programmers, Alex Zhu and Luyu Lang. TikTok was created with the purpose of spreading people’s creativity through 15 second videos of them dancing to a song or doing a little skit.
“I think TikTok is popular because people enjoy sharing videos of themselves,” Sophomore Alex Cierra said. “I like watching the videos because they’re really funny and they just make me laugh.”
TikTok is quite a simple app at heart, but it has captured millions around the world with its quirky charm and huge variety of videos.
